Psilocybin is the main chemical ingredient found in shrooms or magic mushrooms. These mushrooms contain roughly 3-30 mg of psilocybin. This means that mushrooms can range in levels of potencey due to how much psilocybin is actually contained within the mushroom. Once ingested through the mouth psilocybin is converted into psilocin, which is much less stable and more potent. Both psilocin and psilocybin is considered to be a psychedelic drug. This means that they somehow change your normal state of mind, in this case it affects the bodies senses causing them to seem more acute.

The use of hallucinogenic mushrooms have been traced back to 5000 B.C. in parts of Northern Nigeria. Here paintings and carvings seem to indicate the worship of gods of hallucinogenic plants. This would obviously seem to indicate that mushrooms containing psilocybin were used before the birth of Christ. Cortez also indicated the Aztecs widespread use of hallucinogenic mushrooms and plants. The Aztecs used these mushrooms during sacred rituals in which the Aztec priest and his followers would ingest them thinking that they were receiving spiritual insight from their gods. In Mexico such mushrooms were easy to grow and farm, later the mushrooms were brought to America around the same time Europeans began to settle there.

Psilocybin mushrooms vary in species but they are known as a "native psychedelic mushroom" which means that they grow naturally usually after the rain during the summer season. The mushrooms spread just like any other common fungi; through spores that freely travel once the plant has matured. The spores can easily be cultivated/grow in manure because it supplies all the basic nutrients fungus needs. Once the spore begins to grow hairs begin to grow and form together this is called mycellium. Mycellium is a a very selective bacteria needing only warm dry weather since too much water will decay the roots. Mycellium is both is the outward mushroom that we actually see and the psilocybin which is inside the mushroom and does not show outwardly.

Mushrooms containing psilocybin are less common then other drugs only because of the difficulty of growing and storing.
